Tenebrae Service

Looking for a place to attend church this easter?
We would love for you to join us as we remember the sacrifice that Jesus made for us on the cross .

What is a Tenebrae service?
The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or “shadows,” has been practised by the church since medieval times. Originally a service for monks, Tenebrae later became an important part of the worship of all believers during Holy Week. We join Christians of many generations throughout the world in using this liturgy.

Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ’s passion, the music portrays his anguish, and the power of silence and darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day. As lights are extinguished, we ponder the depth of Christ’s suffering and death; and we remember the cataclysmic nature of his sacrifice as we hear the overwhelming sound of the clashing symbols. The service concludes with a candle hidden but not extinguished. The symbolism is that darkness is winning, but it has not overcome. With the veiled but persistent flame of the Christ candle at the conclusion of the service, we see a glimmer of hope and anticipate the joy of ultimate victory in 3 days.

Lent Prayer Labyrinth
Feb
14
to 30 Mar

Lent Prayer Labyrinth

Lent is a period of forty days leading up to Easter Sunday, during which Christians traditionally engage in fasting, prayer. It is a time of self-examination, repentance, and spiritual discipline, mirroring Jesus Christ's forty days of fasting in the wilderness.

Each year, DAC focuses on a spiritual discipline as a “Core” activity; last year, it was Sabbath and finding rest in God. This year, our spiritual discipline is prayer. Prayer is a vital aspect of the Christian life, serving as a means of communication with God and a posture of humility before God. In essence, prayer is a conversation with the divine, a way to express our thoughts, feelings, and desires to our Heavenly Father who is near and deelpy cares.

We are introducing a Prayer Labyrinth at St. Luke's Brownsville to aid us in our prayer journey during this Lenten season. A Prayer Labyrinth is a spiritual tool used for prayer and meditation. It consists of a winding path on the ground, leading participants to journey toward the centre and back out again. Unlike a maze designed to confuse and challenge, a labyrinth has a single, uninterrupted path, symbolising the journey of faith and inner reflection. Walking the labyrinth can be a transformative experience, providing space for contemplation, prayer, and spiritual renewal.

Take a moment to detach from the hustle and bustle of life, dedicating your time and prayers to God. The labyrinth invites you to walk its path at your own pace, offering a space for reflection and spiritual connection.

Upon entering, follow the instructions to walk through the labyrinth three times. The first round prompts you to quiet your mind, acknowledge your emotions, and conclude with a moment of confession. In the second round, center yourself by reading a provided passage, remaining open to the insights that God may unveil to you. Finally, in the third round, broaden your focus beyond yourself, lifting up individuals and circumstances to God in prayer.

Embrace this opportunity for deep introspection and communion with the divine during this Lenten season.
