Make Way for the King
The king is here, in Australia I mean. King Charles is visiting. And while his presence sparks the unresolved debate about whether Australia should be a republic or not, nonetheless, we pull out all the stops. There’s the crowds that gather at all his events, 17….. 17 events in one day. There’s the speeches, the gifts, the gatherings of special and honoured guests. The spectacle alone is intriguing to observe.
Imagine being one of his attendants there as he meets and greets his subjects in public. There in the masses and you are standing there next to the king, next to the queen, at their service, caught up in all that celebration. The crowds aren’t there for you, but you are part of that event.
There is an honour attached to serving the king, serving royalty. 1 Peter reminds us that the church is a ‘royal priesthood’. We are servants of the king. And not just the king of the Commonwealth or king of one land, but king of the cosmos. The one true king, the king of kings. Whatever the world makes of us as Christians, as the church, we serve at the pleasure of the king. We are caught up in the honour that is due him when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, that he reigns. Our service is, our following him, our trusting and believing in him, our hoping in him is royal in nature because we serve our king. Our king who loves us and died for us that we may live for him now.
